👧👦 Teen Devotional — Day 205

Speaking Words That Give Life

đź“– “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.”
—Proverbs 16:24 (NKJV)

Scripture consistently emphasizes the power of words. What you say can encourage, heal, strengthen, comfort, or deeply wound others. Proverbs compares pleasant words to honeycomb because wise and gracious speech brings refreshment and benefit rather than harm.

As a teenager, words are used constantly—through conversations, texting, social media, jokes, reactions, and everyday interactions. In many environments, harshness, sarcasm, gossip, and careless speech are normalized. Yet followers of Christ are called to speak differently.

Pleasant words do not mean empty flattery or avoiding truth. Biblical speech combines truth with grace, wisdom, and love. It seeks to build others up rather than tear them down. Words shaped by Christ reflect patience, kindness, and self-control.

Jesus taught that words reveal the condition of the heart. Speech is not merely about communication; it exposes what is taking place internally. A heart shaped by anger, pride, or bitterness will eventually reveal those things through speech, while a heart transformed by Christ increasingly speaks with grace and wisdom.

Through the Holy Spirit, Christ helps you grow in godly speech. He convicts when words become careless or harmful and teaches you to pause before speaking impulsively. Over time, your speech begins reflecting greater wisdom and maturity.

Wise words also require discernment. Sometimes encouragement is needed; other times correction or truth must be spoken. In every situation, believers are called to speak in ways that honor God and care for others.

There will be moments when choosing wise speech feels difficult, especially when emotions are strong or conflict arises. In those moments, surrendering your words to Christ becomes an act of obedience and self-control.

Knowing Christ transforms speech from careless reaction into purposeful communication shaped by truth and grace.

Words shaped by Christ bring life, wisdom, and grace to others.

Prayer:
Jesus, help me use my words in ways that honor You and encourage others. Guard me from careless, harsh, or harmful speech, and teach me to speak with wisdom, truth, and grace. Let my words reflect the condition of a heart being shaped by You each day. Amen.
