Jesus Wants His People to Be One

📖 “That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You.”
—John 17:21 (NKJV)

Jesus did not pray only for the disciples who were with Him that night. He also prayed for everyone who would later believe in Him through their message. That includes believers today.

Jesus prayed that His people would be one. This does not mean Christians become the same person or agree about every small preference. Believers have different backgrounds, abilities, and responsibilities. Their unity comes from belonging to the same Lord, believing the same gospel, and sharing the life given by the Holy Spirit.

Christian unity does not mean pretending truth is unimportant. In the same prayer, Jesus said, “Your word is truth” (John 17:17, NKJV). We cannot create unity by changing what God has said or treating every teaching as equally true. Genuine unity grows as believers remain faithful to Christ and His Word.

Sin often damages that unity. Pride makes us want our own way. Jealousy makes another person’s gifts feel threatening. Gossip spreads division, and refusing to forgive allows hurt to grow. Paul instructed believers to walk humbly, patiently, and lovingly, “endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3, NKJV).

You can help protect unity by telling the truth, refusing gossip, apologizing when you are wrong, and forgiving those who repent. You can also value believers who are different from you. One child may sing well, another may understand Scripture quickly, and another may notice when someone feels left out. God gives different gifts so His people may serve one another.

Unity does not require you to ignore wrongdoing. If someone is being harmed, bullied, or pressured to sin, tell a trustworthy adult. Biblical peace is not silence that protects sin. God’s truth helps His people confront wrongdoing with the goal of repentance, safety, and restoration.

The earliest Christian churches brought together people who normally would not have shared life. Jews and Gentiles, rich and poor, servants and masters gathered to worship one Lord. Their differences sometimes caused conflict, but the gospel taught them that everyone who believed belonged to one body in Christ.

Imagine children from very different families sharing a meal after believers gathered for worship. They may have spoken differently or lived in homes with different customs, yet they were learning to call one another brother and sister because they belonged to Jesus.

The unity of Christians also bears witness to the world. When believers love one another across differences, forgive offenses, and work together in truth, they show that Christ has created something human pride could not produce.

Knowing Christ means I belong not only to Him but also to His people. I should not allow pride, jealousy, gossip, or selfishness to divide me from other believers. Jesus prayed that His people would be one, and I can help protect that unity by walking in truth, humility, and love.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for praying for everyone who would believe in You. Help me love Your people and protect the unity You have given us. Forgive me for pride, jealousy, gossip, selfishness, and refusing to forgive. Teach me to value the different gifts You give others, speak truth with love, and seek peace without hiding sin. Help Your people live as one body so the world may see the work You have done. Amen.
