Courage Rooted in God’s Presence
đź“– “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
—Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)
Joshua received this command as he prepared to lead Israel into unfamiliar and difficult circumstances. God did not tell him to rely upon self-confidence or human strength. Instead, courage was rooted in one unchanging reality: “the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
As a teenager, you may face many situations that can produce fear or uncertainty—new responsibilities, difficult decisions, standing up for the truth, future concerns, rejection, failure, or circumstances beyond your control. Fear often grows when you focus only on your own ability or understanding.
Yet biblical courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the decision to trust and obey God despite fear because His presence is greater than the uncertainty before you. Joshua’s strength came not from knowing every detail in advance, but from knowing that God would remain with him.
God also commands Joshua not to be “dismayed,” meaning not to lose heart or become discouraged. Fear and discouragement often work together, weakening confidence and leading to hesitation. But God’s presence provides stability when emotions feel unsettled.
Through the Holy Spirit, Christ strengthens your heart with courage. He reminds you of God’s promises, helps you stand firm in difficult moments, and gives strength to continue obeying even when situations feel intimidating.
Courage is often revealed in ordinary faithfulness—speaking the truth when compromise feels easier, remaining obedient when pressured to do otherwise, or continuing to trust God when the future feels unclear. These moments become opportunities to walk by faith rather than fear.
There will still be moments when fear rises. In those moments, courage grows by turning your focus away from the size of the challenge and toward God’s faithfulness. His presence remains constant even when circumstances change.
Knowing Christ transforms courage from self-confidence into steady trust in the God who is always present.
True courage grows from trusting the presence and faithfulness of God.
Prayer:
Jesus, help me walk in courage and trust You when fear or uncertainty arises. Remind me that You are always with me and that I do not face challenges alone. Strengthen my heart through Your Spirit so that I may stand firm in faith, obedience, and trust each day. Amen.
